Background
Universe is a 'yajna' an evolutionary sacrifice in which one form sacrifices to build more complex forms. But it is not one yajna. There are five Yajnas running one inside another in the Universe, according to Brhadharanyaka Upanishad. Each of these Yajna has a 'Purusha', the observer, a 'Pazu' that is sacrificed and evolving (called Prakrti or Stri, the evolute).
This observer or witness or sAksi (puruSa) driving the evolution of evolute (prakRti) is a design pattern across these five yajnas. What are those five yajnas..? In my understanding they are
1. Energy evolution : Dark energy driving the evolution of energy. Here Dark energy that expands the Universe is the puruSa, Energy that undergoes transformation is prakRti or pazu or the 'stri'
2. Particle evolution: Dark matter driving the evolution of quantum states of matter. Here Dark matter is the puruSa, matter that undergoes transformation is prakRti or pazu or the stri.
3. Matter evolution: Bending/Curvature of spacetime due to energy/mass, called Gravitational force, catalyzes the evolution of classical states of matter. This is the puruSa. Elements that undergo transformation is prakRti or pazu or stri.
4. Biological evolution: Thermal energy or Heat catalyzes the evolution of biological beings with consciousness. This thermal energy are the puruSa. Biological structures that undergo transformation are prakRti or pazu or stri.
5. Consciousness evolution: Manas-sAksi drives the evolution of consciousness. Here conscience or manas-sAksi or witness is the puruSa. Manas or thoughts that control our actions are the prakRti or pazu or stri.
This design pattern of observer driving evolution (puruSa-prakrti) is from different scriptures across Brhadharanyaka Upanishad, mandukya upanishad, saMkhya kArika, vAkyapaidya et al.
The design pattern in 'evolution' of the 'evolute'
Beyond observer driving evolution, there is also a design pattern in how the evolution of the prakRti or evolute happens. It happens in four stages across all domains or all the five yajnas.
saMkhya kArika talks about this evolution of prakRti or evolute, as happening in four steps which are 'manas', 'citta', 'ahamkara' and 'indriyas'.
mAndukya upanishad talks about this evolution as happening as in four steps as 'Sarvajnna', 'ekibhuta prajna', antah-prajna and bAhis-prajna. Rgveda also talks about this evolution as the four-fold vAk.
According to Brhathari's vAkyapadiya, the expression of human language, which conveys information content or knowledge, is based on the same design pattern as the expression of Universe by that 'Atman' or 'Para' that exists beyond everything. Brhathari's vAkyapadiya talks about the design pattern of human language or expression (vAk) as in four steps, which are Para, pazyanti, madhyama and vaikhari.
Design pattern of Universe's evolution across scriptures
Stage | Samkhya karika | Mandukya Upanishad | Vakyapadiya |
1 | Manas
The underlying, undifferentiated, indivisible, invisible, consciousness spread across any entity that evolves the entity together, be it matter or biological beings. | Sarvajjna
The underlying undifferentiated, indivisible, invisible consciousness that knows everything in our body, beyond all the awareness that we have. | Para
The underlying, undifferentiated, indivisible, invisible human consciousness that drives speech |
2 | Citta
The state of differentiated, perceivable form of consciousness, like thoughts on top of human consciousness or probabilistic quantum nature of force-fields that differentiate the energy, but which does not have a ‘self-identity’ to interact and evolve on their own. | Eki-bhuta prajna
The state of deep sleep in which there is differentiation from consciousness, into one perceivable awareness with thoughts, but those thoughts or awareness do not have a ‘self-identity’ to interact externally and evolve on its own. | Pazyanti
The perceivable awareness or thoughts that arise on top of consciousness and drive human speech. |
3 | Aham-kara
The state in which a 'sense' of self-identity arises inside entities, like the sense of ‘self’ or deterministic nature of force-fields, that enable them to externally interact and evolve. | Antah-prajna
The state of dream, in which there is consciousness, thoughts/awareness and also a sense of 'self-identity' or ego (the 'I' perspective perceived in a dream) that builds up on these consciousness and awareness. | Madhyama
Combination of thoughts that drive operation of vocal chords using prAna on top of consciousness and thoughts, which reflects the ‘I’ or ‘self-identity. |
4 | Indriya
The state in which, through instruments of external interactions, buddhi or knowledge builds up. There are ten Indriyas. | Bahis-prajna
The state of waking up, in which there is not just consciousness, awareness, identity, but in which due to external interaction, buddhi or knowledge builds up, | Vaikhari
The external expression of speech, which is an instrument of external interaction, that builds buddhi or knowledge. |
5 | Design pattern or model for evolution of Universe’s evolution as a general model | Design pattern or model of Universe’s evolution in terms of Human consciousness | Design pattern or model of Universe’s evolution in terms of Human speech |
The design pattern across the five yajnas
The five yajnas | Manas, Sarvajjna, Para | Citta, eki-bhuta prajna, pazyanti | Ahamkara, antah-prajna, madhyama | Indriyas, bahis-prajna, vaikhari |
Energy evolution | The non differentiable, indivisible energy that undergoes transformation | The probabilistic, quantum nature of force-fields (Rudras) which differentiate the energy, making it perceivable | The deterministic, particle nature of force-fields giving them an 'identity' and hence ability to interact with others | Indivisible, primitive, particles that interact with other particles, making the knowledge or buddhi of the Universe. |
It is on the bAhis-prajna/indriyas/vaikhAri of the Yajna of energy evolution, the next Yajna of particle evolution happens. |
Particle evolution | The non differentiable, indivisible primitive particles that undergo transformation | The composite particles like protons, neutrons, atomic nucleus that arise on these indivisible primitive particles making them perceivable | Atoms that form from the union of composite particles, provide a ‘self-identity’ that enables the atoms to interact as one entity and build more complex forms. | Primitive elements that form due to interactions between atoms, making the knowledge or buddhi of the Universe. |
It is on the bAhis-prajna/indriyas/vaikhAri of the Yajna of particle evolution, the next Yajna of matter evolution happens. |
Matter evolution | The primitive elements that undergo transformation. | Molecular clouds that make these primitive elements perceivable | Molecules of compounds with self-identity that enable these compounds to interact as one entity and build more complex forms. | Primitive RNA/DNA structures that form due to interaction between compounds, making buddhi or knowledge of Universe |
It is on the bAhis-prajna/indriyas/vaikhAri of the Yajna of matter evolution, the next Yajna of biological evolution happens. |
Biological evolution | The primitive RNA/DNA structures that undergo transformation | Primitive biological beings like viruses make these genetic structures perceivable | Biological beings that can do metabolism also, bringing them self-identity and ability to act as one entity. | Complex biological beings that host consciousness development, making the buddhi or knowledge of the Universe. |
It is on the bAhis-prajna/indriyas/vaikhAri of the Yajna of biological evolution, the next Yajna of consciousness evolution happens. |
Consciousness evolution | The nondifferentiable consciousness' that undergo transformation | The differentiated ‘thoughts’ or signaling that makes this consciousness perceivable | The 'self-identity' perspective or 'I' that arises on consciousness and perceivable thoughts, that gives ability to act as one entity. | Thoughts with self-identity that interact, facilitating the evolution of buddhi or knowledge. |
The above is to document my understanding of the design pattern across scriptures.
